Time Arrived: 7.20pm
Time Left: 8.20pm

Calories: 420

Workout

20 minutes stepper, level 4

20 minutes rowing, level 6

Leg extensions, 2 reps

Leg curls, 2 reps

Floor work, 100 crunches.

Thoughts
I want to run again!!!!! I know I can't but I was looking at people running on the treadmills with such longing. Taking all my willpower not to do anything. Anyway, stepper was easy. Rowing was slightly harder - pains in chest - but that was probably the increase in level that did that. Kept the pace nicely in the second mile.

Plans
Nothing until Sunday, then we shall see what I feel like.

Time Left 13.05pm

Calories 400

Workout

20 minutes cross trainer, level 5/6

20 minutes walking, speed 4.2, incline 7.5, 10, 15, 7.5, 0

Bicep curls, 10 reps 3kg weights.

Thoughts
Pushed myself for the cross trainer and made sure I stuck to the pace. The walking was okay until I increased the pace and the incline. Knee hurt.

Plans
Not entirely sure what I want to do tomorrow. I think rowing and cycling need to be on the agenda, but the third thing...not sure. Maybe stepping again. Then hit the pool for a quick swim. In theory. Or boxing. Who knows.

Workout

23 minutes walking, speed 6.5, level 7.5, 10, 15, 0

20 minutes stepping, level 4

Shoulder press, 2 reps
Chest press, 2 reps
Leg extension, 2 reps

Floor work - 100 crunches, 50 side crunches, 100 pulses, 50 side crunches, 100 pulses

With ball/weights 20 squats, 10 bicep curls on each side

Thoughts
I could have stayed on but took fate (in the form of both exercise bikes being used) as a hint and went home. The walking was okay. Very easy on the lungs but the knee was hurting for the first 10 minutes or so, maybe still too much impact as a speed walker. Stepping was easy. So much so I thought I was on the wrong level! Pleased with the floor work and the machines so all in all, not a bad workout.

Plans
Tomorrow if it is a lunch session will be 20 cross and 20 cycling, if an evening session I may not go! LOL. Seriously, will do the cross training, cycling and rowing.

Calories 300 (gym only)

Workout

20 minutes cross trainer, level 6/3/5

10 minutes cycling, level 3

10 minutes walking, incline 10, 15, speed 3.8

Swimming - 3/4 mile in approx 35 minutes

Thoughts
The cross trainer was a struggle, mainly due to lack of inhaler. Cycling was easy, but I was on the one that keeps your back upright on a low level. Walking was easy...I want to run. There was a little soreness on the knees with the walking but nothing too major. Have to stay away from running.

Swimming was good even though I wasn't in the mood. Tired quite quickly but kept plugging away.

Plans
I am thinking tomorrow may be a good day to start the boxing class again. After the session with Paula on Thursday, it reminded me how much I enjoy doing it. Plus it will give me variety. If I don't, then it will have to be cross trainer, step and proper cycling.

The Week in Review - Week 18
Another slack exercising week.

From memory, Monday was okay - stuck with low impact stuff. Tuesday was a swimming day, Wednesday another low impact day, Thursday was Personal trainer (boxing and weights). Finally today was a rowing, stepping and cross training day.

It's been nothing special. I need to pick up the pace again and stop fretting over this back thing.

The Week in Review - Week 17
Okay, lack of updates I know. Still been doing the gym. 29th April I made it to two miles without injury. Huh. That was my last stint at running for a while.

The personal trainer was demoralising to be honest.

I want to give it all up.

Workout

20 minutes cross trainer, level 5

5 minutes running, speed 6.3
2.5 minutes walking, speed 3.5
5 minutes running, speed 6.3
2.5 minutes walking, speed 3.5
3 minutes running, speed 6.5
2 minutes running, speed 6.0

Floor work - 100 crunches

Swimming - 3/4 mile, majority breast-stroke. Approx time 40 minutes.

Thoughts
Well, I wasn't going to tackle the treadmill but did! Made the mistake of doing it after working on the cross trainer so the distance was never going to happen. Quite pleased with the run though, such as it were. No real pain from the knees just a few twinges.

Cross trainer was smooth, good speed.

Swimming was good. My strokes are becoming longer and smoother. The majority are short and fast but when I really concentrate they are better. Something to work on!

Plans
Next workout to be running, cross trainer and cycling. Have to get back into it without overdoing it.

The Week in Review - Week 16
One of the worst weeks for a long time, exercise wise. I know the reason and I have to keep that in perspective. Now is not the time to drop the ball on the exercise front though. Because I have been miserable all week over lack of exercise I took to the chocolate.

*sighs*

The swimming is definitely feeling stronger but I have lost the impetus in the gym. Worried I will be doing more harm than good.

I'll write this week off as a bad job...must try harder!

Workout

1 hours worth of swimming. Covered 1 mile; 3/4 mile breaststroke, 1/4 mile backstroke plus some extra metres for the hell of it.

Thoughts
Working on protecting the knees. Swimming is supposed to be good for the joints, so why did it hurt so much. Am I swimming wrong, am I twisting my knee when I am swimming. Can I give it up, or should I swim a different stroke. I felt better after I had been swimming for about 20 minutes. The first session was a little painful though.

Waiting for the sports person to phone me back about a consultation. If I have to give something up it will be the swimming. I can always take up boxing again to give my workout a bit of variety.

Plans
Going for a light workout of low impact stuff tomorrow. Cycling, Cross training and maybe walking. Have to do something!

Calories 500

Workout

5 minutes warm up walk

8 minutes running, speed 10
3 minutes walking, speed 5
2 minutes running, speed 10

20 minutes cross trainer, level 5

Floor work - 100 crunches, 100 side crunches, 100 pulses, 100 side crunches, 100 pulses

20 minutes cycling, level 3

2 minutes running, speed 10.5

Thoughts

Something has to give? Can I give up the gym for a week to rest the knee? Can I give up swimming to see whether it is that which is having an effect? Should I switch to low impact work, cross training for example, if I cannot give up the gym?

This was a disaster today. Every step I made after 6 minutes was hurting. At least I still retain enough sense to not continue and make it worse. The cross training was okay though, the floor work was good and the cycling was okay up until about 15 minutes when the twinges started. It was the running that was causing the pain though. So, no running for a while?

Plans

Minimum 30 minutes on the cross trainer tomorrow and take it from there. Resist the treadmill!

Workout

20 minutes running, speed 6.2/6.1/6.2
5 minutes walking, speed 3.0
5 minutes running, speed 6.5

10 minutes cross trainer, level 5

Swimming 1 mile, approx 55 minutes

Thoughts
The running was slightly slower than it should have been - did the calculation wrong, so was running at 9.9 roughly. It was a slight strain, so it is perhaps a good job I didn't go any faster than that. The irony of being able to run with a dodgy knee but to struggle walking isn't lost on me.

Cross trainer was good, nice and smooth at a good speed.

Swimming was okay, scratch that, swimming was good. The knee was giving me grief....not the sore one though, the other one. *shrugs*. Definitely getting faster in the pool, and the stamina is increasing and the strokes are getting longer and more leisurely, but covering the distance faster. And it is having a great effect on my body! :)

Plans
Seeing how the body is tomorrow. If it is holding up okay, plan to run, step (may give this a miss), cycle and cross train. Rowing is out, unless I do a 10 minute session. We'll see.

The Week in Review - Week 15
Well, I seem to be having good week/bad week. Any guesses as to which this one was?

The positives? Well, the swimming went well and that is definitely shaping my body in a whole new way to what the gym is doing.

The negative? I suspect it is the swimming that is hurting my knee. In theory swimming is good for the joints but the pain that I have been having with my knee has only come about after starting up with the swimming.

So, because of the knee thing, the gym has taken a back seat this week. Have I missed it? You bet I have - had to force myself not to go today, and I don't think I should go this coming week to give my knee chance to recover. However, I cannot give it up, so I am going but will be conscious of any pain.

Gym wise, this week hasn't been a successful one. The running has been okay, with an increase in the speed again for five minutes. Really this week has just been one of getting by. I am hoping to have a better week this coming week but given that I am now getting chest pains, I am not overly hopeful.

Workout

3 minutes warm up walk
1 minute running

2 minutes cycling

Floor work - 100 crunches, 100 pulses, 100 side crunches, 100 pulses, 100 side crunches, stretches

30 minutes cross trainer, level 3

4 reps abdominal crunch
2 reps Chest press
2 reps Shoulder press

Swimming - just over 1/2 mile

Thoughts
Not a proper workout, knee too sore. I did attempt to run on two occasions, but the walking was bad enough. The running was okay for a minute but then it was evident I was going to do some serious damage if I carried on.

So, all in all, rather disappointing. The cross trainer I got a good time in but the level wasn't brilliant and even that, low impact that it was, was hurting.

Swimming was okay, hurting at first but eased up. Slow and steady.

Plans
I think the body is telling me to give it a rest. Will see how things progress at work tomorrow but I am not holding out for another session until Monday. There is no point putting pressure on to workout when I am not in the best of shapes!

10 minutes cross trainer, level 6

Swimming</b> 3/4 mile in 45 minutes

Thoughts

Not a brilliant session. I was struggling with the treadmill but made it through to the 20 minutes. Having a bad knee day and a dodgy set of lungs - hoping I am not coming down with a cold or anything. The cross trainer was okay, the level was good and the speed was maintained so that was okay.

Swimming was good. The arms were suffering a little but I would have been on target for a mile an hour session.

Plans
Not entirely sure which route to go down tomorrow. I definitely need to do some stepping, rowing, cycling etc but will it impact on my already sore knee. Or, is it the running which is hurting it more. Either way, I need to get a good session in. Will be doing about 90 minutes in the gym and then hitting the pool again.

Hopefully it will go well, but we'll see.

Swimming</b> - covered 1 mile in an hour

Thoughts

Pleased again with the run, especially the final five minutes. The last run was very comfortable. Not sure how long I could have continued at that speed but I was very comfortable.

The swimming was good again. I felt like I was slower than the other day but I covered the same distance. Plus I kept going longer without a break - lengths rather than widths and did it in two 1/2 mile slots.

Plans
Not sure on tomorrow - definitely twinging in the calf muscles on exiting the pool. I just have to see whether they calm down. Think I have strained them. If they are okay, then the plan is to run, step, cycle, row and cross train.

The Week in Review - Week 14
What is there not to be pleased about?

I have learnt lessons from this week - namely that a diet like that which everyone is on at work and my level of exercise is not compatible! Whilst I have watched my food intake this week (sort of, ish, falling down this weekend with chocolate) - the one day I tried to "diet" properly was the one day I struggled like hell at the gym. So, I am not "dieting". Just monitoring the food, and eating before I workout!

Gymwise, one day aside, it has been a good week. Started off with a 30 minute run and didn't meet that target again. Indeed, I struggled after this, but did complete a 30 minute run again split over an hour. Of the rest of the gym work, I am beginning to work on my crunches, and getting them so they really begin to pull on my muscles.

The stepping session I did was okay, the cycling needs improving and the rowing definitely needs to get back into the workout.

Of the swimming sessions, I am really pleased with how it is going, and I think it is having an effect on my body as well - giving it a new workout definitely helps!

More of the same for the coming week I hope.

4 minutes walking, speed 6.7, incline 5
3 minutes running, speed 10.5

**5 minute break**

Floor work - 100 crunches, 100 side crunches, 100 pulses, 100 side crunches, 100 pulses

20 minutes cross trainer, level 5

10 minutes rower, level 5

3 reps stomach cruncher machine (!!!)
2 reps shoulder press
2 reps chest press

Thoughts

Another good workout, albeit I didn't do what I had planned to do. The running was good, again. It had definitely gotten easier with the day off yesterday. Made it to about 19 minutes without wanting to grab hold of the rail - progression! Again, the walking was okay but a little more strained than I have been used to. The final batch of running was excellent. I willingly upped the speed dramatically and it was absolutely fine for the 3 minutes I was doing it. I could possibly have gone longer but didn't want to push things too much.

The break was a necessity! Pleased with the floor work as I am beginning to push myself on it, and the free weights. The cross trainer was fairly smooth - not as fast as I have done it but nothing to worry about. The rowing was the hardest - definitely pulling on the tops of my legs and my arms. That must be one of the things I will need to work on during the week.

My only concern is that my left knee is beginning to hurt. Whether I am running too much or straining it walking, or doing too much exercise completely I don't know. I may look at dropping things out of the regime and seeing if it improves. I hope it isn't the running. Maybe it is just the resistance level on one of the machines. Definitely something to monitor.

Plans
Tomorrow will be a running/walking day. Aiming for 20 minutes running and then the rest can be walking. If I can do longer than 20 minutes I will, but that is the aim. Also aiming for a swimming session in the evening.

Swimming - spent well over an hour the pool and did over a mile, probably nearer a mile and a quarter.

5 minutes warm up walk

20 minutes running, speed 10.0

20 minutes walking, speed 6.7, incline 10, 15, 15, 15, 0

20 minutes cross trainer, level 5, 4, 3, 5, 4

Floorwork - 100 crunches, 100 side crunches, 100 pulses, 100 side crunches, 100 pulses

Thoughts
Swimming first. Well pleased. Covered a mile in an hour, very little stopping involved. I felt like a hamster in a wheel - back, forwards, back, forwards. Definitely getting stronger at this, and faster, and developing more of a technique. And no cramp! Bonus. :)

Gym work, I didn't expect a stellar workout after the swim but it was a solid one. The running was mediocre, made it to 20 minutes but was struggling from the 15 minutes mark. Walking was easy, maybe have to think of increasing the speed on it. Cross trainer was difficult, couldn't get into the rhythm needed so dropped the resistance which made it easier, but not much!

A full hour on cardio after doing the hour swimming was a good workout. Two other good things happened - the scales weighed me at 3kg lighter than last week (meaning it was probably just the time of the month) and someone complimented me on how much weight I had lost. :D

Plans
Nothing tomorrow, a well deserved rest. Sunday, will look at consolodating all of this weeks work - so, a bit of everything but not necessarily the full 20 minutes on each. The only thing I need to do is run the 20 minutes, and hope it is comfortable.

Floor work - 100 crunches, 100 side crunches, 100 pulses, 100 side crunches, 100 pulses

Swimming - probably about 1/4 mile, very busy and annoying people constantly getting in the way!

Thoughts
Definitely the aftermath of yesterday's workout. It was a good session in that it was difficult and I managed to get through. I didn't do as much as I had planned for but I am not too bothered about that. The important thing was to get there and do something.

Plans
Tomorrow will hopefully be a swimming day, followed by a shorter gym workout. Aiming to run, row, step and cross train.

20 minutes stepper, level 4 (2 minutes at level 5)

20 minutes cycling, level 4/3/2/3/4/1

Swimming - 1 hour in pool, 1/2 mile + 1/8 mile

Thoughts
If yesterday was crap, today was fantastic! From the top, the running was okay, nothing special. At 15 minutes I started struggling but battled through to the 20 marker. The walking was easy, and slipping back into the running was okay. Struggling to get past 5 minutes so it was easier to stop and walk.

Floor work, pleased with the crunches. I did make an effort to actually do them properly and slowly which was pulling more on the stomach muscles than usual.

The stepper was good. Tried to increase the resistance to level 5 but it proved a little too difficult, and really I don't need to be increasing resistance as that will build muscle. I need to lose fat not get more muscular!! The cycling was a stuggle. I didn't last at level 4 at all, I think by that point my body had had enough and the legs were suffering.

And onto the swimming....I managed to end up in the middle of a swimming lesson, but hey ho! Did 1/4 mile non-stop (virtually, after the first lap or so). Then did 8 lengths (4 laps) non-stop before the kids got in the way. Tackled another 1/4 mile once they had gone and did a final 6 lengths (3 laps) for fun before I got bored. Slight cramp at one point and by the end I was exhausted. Getting better at doing the 1/4 mile without stopping and I am sure the speed must be getting better.

Plans

A shorter session tomorrow! Running, rowing, cross training and *maybe* cycling again. Definitely hitting the pool again. Not expecting miracles tomorrow given today's effort, but we'll see.
